Background and history

The Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries (LMMC) was created in Cancun in 2002, as a mechanism for consultation and cooperation to promote the interests related to conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Member countries of LMMC hold 60-70% of the Earth’s species and are considered megadiverse.

To date, there are 20 member countries of LMMC namely Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of The Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Iran, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, South Africa and Venezuela. Member countries of LMMCs meet consistently on the margin of the meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), negotiating as a group, and influencing decision-making processes.
